Branch Meeting Thursday Dec 10th

Mother of Pearl
Talk by George Hook

I must confess that when I looked at my programme card for the December meeting I didn't feel any great expectations for the afternoon.
How wrong I was!! From the minute that George introduced himself, in his lovely 'Brummie' accent, as being the managing director of the largest button making firm in Birmingham
and quickly qualified this by revealing the he was the sole employee of the only button making firm in Birmingham, you just knew you were in for a treat.
The talk was very instructional and we quickly learned that only oyster shell should a
really be referred to as mother of pearl shell.

As we handled the samples we were surprised at the weight of the shells

The amazing colours to be found in abalone shells was a surprise to many of us and we learned that there were beautiful aspects to sea snails shells also.

You can see the size of this snail shell against my mobile phone placed beside it.

As George talked about his materials and showed us some samples (the one below was prepared  as example of economic cutting from a shell) he had a continuous commentary which was at once informative and very amusing. It would be foolish to try to repeat any of his banter because it comes best from the Horses mouth, so to speak.

Suffice to say that we were all totally amused, educated and keen to learn more.

At the end of his talk we were given the chance to shop and many people were delighted to buy the very beautiful and reasonably priced items on offer.

Although the talk was over many were still eager to speak to George further and he was happy to oblige.

George Hook"s talk would be suitable for many different organisations and I could thoroughly recommend it.
A real treat

Branch meeting Nov 19th 2015

There were two workshops today
The first one was led by Anne Whaley, a branch member,

and was to produce embroidered labels.

Here are some of Anne's examples

The members today worked on some Christmas designs which Anne had produced.

Most people were taking them home to finish. You can see the concentration!!

The other workshop was to produce wire brooches. This was led by Val Coleshaw, the North West EG Chairman.
She brought along some examples

There was something to appeal to all tastes.
Val also brought along many coloured wires of different thicknesses and assorted beads, charms etc

The group soon got to work and all went home very satisfied with the brooch they had made.

This was a very positive meeting for our branch as today we welcomed not just one but three new members. We welcome them and hope they have a long association with our branch.

Jean Goodchild showed a tablecloth and cushion on the members work table. Many of us bought similar tablecloths from another member. We will be hard pushed to match jean's standards!!!

Winter Landscapes workshop

Here are some pictures taken at the end of the winter landscapes workshop

The pictures do not really do justice to the results
Some lucky people are going to get some beautiful cards this year.

Doodle hanging

This picture shows a collaborative piece done by the branch during the past year.
Earlier in the blog I showed some examples of individual embroideries done under the name of doodle pictures
We were led in this project by Barbara Bauckham and she has joined all the pieces together to make this wonderful hanging .

Back In Business

Due to my many absences from meetings during early 2015 I suspended  the blog but as from today we are back in business.

I must look at something in retrospect though because at the September meeting the Rochdale branch celebrated its 20th anniversary.
After the AGM  we began the birthday celebrations.

Members had been asked to bring along an example of their work over the years and what an exhibition that made!!

Our chairman, Hilary Small also unveiled our new collaborative piece which was made at her suggestion. Members were used to select from different embroidery techniques and to work a 5in by 5in sample of that technique, mainly in red.
At first it was hoped to have 20 different samples, one for each year but more than twenty members participated.
Jan Mellor  devised the method of joining the pieces and this is the wonderful finished result.

After the meeting some volunteer members acted as waitresses to serve the others with afternoon tea. The caterers were Park Farm from near Ramsbottom and the food was plentiful and utterly delicious. We used their bone china and that made the atmosphere very genteel

Finally a birthday cake was cut by one of the longer standing members, Audrey Diggines.

Helen  Jackson proposed a vote of thanks.

An afternoon to remember!!!
